Goods & Services Tax: The Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 7% is applicable to most purchased goods and services, but rebates on accommodations and purchases taken out of the country can be claimed by non-residents of Canada; or contact Canada Customs at (604) 666-1802.

 

Language: English and French are Canada's two official languages.

 

Personal: All goods must be declared. Wearing apparel and personal effects for use by visitors are admitted free of duty. Persons aged 19 or over are entitled to take with them up to 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, 200 rams (8oz.), of tobacco; and 1.14 litres (40oz.) of spirits or wine or 8.5 litres (288oz.) of beer or ale.

 

Telephones: Public telephones are located in all major centres. A local call costs 25 cents.

 

Time Zones/Daylight Savings Time: Pacific Standard Time (B.C.) is three hours behind Eastern Standard Time (Ontario). B.C. is one hour behind Alberta.

 

Tipping: The average tip in Canada is 15%.
